Fighting through the Challenges of Getting Healthy: An interview with Kim Griffiths
Hey guys! Did you notice we didn't have a challenge in December? That was our challenge! What did you keep up with without the push from us!
November - Take someone under your wing!
Welcome to November!
Challenge: You've learned a lot over the last 10 months - whether it was about healthy food, or an exercise you didn't think you could do, but now you can. It's important to share that good information with the people you love! Find someone that you think needs a good kick start, and share with them the things you've learned this year. Share with the Facebook community who you've chosen and if they are cooperating. Be a good teacher!
October - Do something completely outside your exercise routine and comfort zone!
Welcome to October!
Challenge: Break the pattern and do something completely outside your exercise routine! If you are normally a runner, try swimming or biking. If you walk for exercise, try something more energetic such as kickboxing or zoomba. Many community centers or gyms offer fun exercise classes like these with the first couple months free.
September - Participate in fitness activity or event!
Welcome to September!
Challenge: Participate in a fitness activity or event! Sign up for a 5K run or walk! Do a charity walk or race! Organize your friends to play soccer for an afternoon! Or attend our Biennial Conference in Bethesda, Maryland! Participate with fellow PXEers in fitness consults and a great morning workout with ACE Certified Personal Trainer, Graham Harding!
August - Weekly Challenges!
Welcome to August!
Every Wednesday a new challenge will be posted to our facebook group.
- Challenge One: Share a healthy recipe on our facebook group.
- Challenge Two: Take the Healthy Lifestyle pop quiz!
- Challenge Three: Share your favorite exercise routine on our facebook group!
- Challenge Four: Time to face your excuses! Post on the the facebook group why you don't always eat right or get that exercise routine in.
- Challenge Five: What have you learned from the PXE Health Challenge so far? Post to our facebook group.
July - Avoid sugar!
Welcome to July!
Personal Goal: Avoid sugar! Stay away from sodas and other high sugar foods, and you'll feel yourself getting over the sugar addiction and feeling better every day!
Community Goal: Share this with people! Tell your friends and family about sugar and the amount of it we find in our daily foods. Help spread awareness so we can all begin to break our addictions to sugar.
June - Get outside!
Welcome to June!
Personal Goal: Get outside! Enjoy the weather and go for a walk, take the dogs to a park, or go for a swim. There are endless possibilities, and you can always find something enjoyable to do outdoors that will contribute to getting and staying healthy.
Community Goal: Take someone outside with you! Friends, family members, co-workers or even pets can be great companions for spending the day in the sun. Finding others to enjoy your time outdoors with can be just as if not more rewarding than the health benefits, and having supportive people around will help maintain a healthy lifestyle.
May - Find your motivation!
Welcome to May!
Personal Goal: Think about what motivates you. How do you get those work out shoes on? How do you encourage yourself to make healthy decisions about food and exercise? It's important to know what gets you up and out of the house so that on days when it seems way too hard you can call on those motivators to keep you going. Share what you've learned about yourself and your motivations with our Facebook event or on the Chat list!
Community Goal: Discuss your motivations with your support system. Tell them how much of a help they are when things aren't going your way. Maybe they have some tips. Share your tips with them. Communicating with your team is a great way to make sure they know how appreciated they are and to keep everyone going.
April - Get active!
Welcome to April!
Personal Goal: Work out every day! Be mindful of your limits but try to push yourself. It doesn't have to be formal or expensive, a little extra physical activity every day will go a long way towards establishing a healthy lifestyle. Look into bodyweight exercises for great ideas that don't require any equipment!
Community Goal: Find someone to work out with! At least once a week find someone that will get active with you, to do anything from structured workouts to simply taking a walk together.
March - Keep an eye on your diet!
Welcome to March!
Personal Goal: Start eating well! This means different things to different people with regards to what their goals are. Join DailyBurn or other tracking tool to keep track of your eating habits and learn how to change them. Read Elizabeth Terry's personal health tips.
Community Goal: Tell everyone! They may be annoyed with you at first but they'll thank you when they are also feeling better and eating healthier!
February - It's time to get moving!
Welcome to February!
Personal Goal: Walk as much as you can in February! It is recommended that the average adult should walk around 10,000 steps a day. Keep track with a pedometer. There are many options (also available at WalMart and most drug stores) like these or if you want all the bells and whistles look here.
Community Goal: Find your support system! A friend/family member/community that is equally committed to your (and hopefully their) goals as you are. Help each other stay motivated and on target!
